Asthma medications

The situation regarding beta-2 agonist asthma medications changed when the 2009 WADA Code was introduced. The medications involved are:

  • formoterol
  • salbutamol
  • salmeterol
  • terbutaline

Some athletes do not need to apply for a TUE before competing:

RTP Athletes
Those in the Registered Testing Pool must obtain a TUE in the normal way prior to taking the medication.

International Athletes
Those competing in international events may apply for a TUE before competing. They may instead apply for a retroactive TUE* following a positive anti-doping test.

National Athletes
This depends on your national anti-doping organisation's policy; normally you may apply for a retroactive TUE* but check before you compete.
