Nomination for FAI Montgolfier Diploma
Dear Sir
The Aero-Club of Switzerland nominates Mr. Bertrand Piccard and Mr. Brian Jones for the FAI Montgolfier Diploma for best achievement in the category Rozier balloon for their non-stop around-the-world balloon flight with the Breitling Orbiter 3.
Bertrand Piccard
Born 1 March 1958, Switzerland
As grandson of August Piccard (famous Swiss physician, inventor of the bathyscaphe, the stratosphere balloon with a pressurised cabin) and son of Jacques Piccard (inventor of the mesoscaphe, deep sea-dive record holder) Bertrand Piccard was predestined to follow in the tracks of adventurers of his ancestors. Bertrand Piccard made his first balloon flight in 1979 and thereafter often used hot air balloons as flying platforms for "in the air take-offs" with hang gliders. Together with the Belgian Wim Verstraeten Bertrand Piccard won the first transatlantic balloon race "Chrysler Transatlantic Challenge" in 1992. Bertrand Piccard is a famous hang glider and ultralight pilot and enjoys paragliding as well.
Brian Jones
born 27 March 1947, GB
Brian Jones developed his passion for ballooning in 1986. Shortly thereafter he acquired the commercial balloon flying license and in 1989 became a ballooning instructor. Mr. Jones is a certified examiner for balloon flight licenses by the British Civil Aviation Authority. Brian Jones was project manager of Breitling Orbiter 3, responsible for the construction of the gondola and the flight systems.
AERO CLUB
SCHWEIZ SUISSE SVIZZERA
Together, the two balloon pioneers accomplished their outstanding achievement in a total of 19 days, 21 hours and 55 minutes, crossing a distance of 40879 kilometres. Brian Jones and Bertrand Piccard started their attempt with the Breitling Orbiter 3 on 1st March 1999 in Chateau d'Oex (Switzerland) and completed the first ever round the world flight on 21st March 1999 landing near Mut (Egypt).
Bertrand Piccard had already two times started an around-the-world attempt. The first starting after a three year preparation period on 12th January 1997 in Chateau d'Oex which was unsuccessful due to technical problems. The second attempt started on 28th January 1998 and ended on 7th February 1999. For this second unsuccessful around-the-world attempt the Breitling Orbiter 2 team achieved world records for the duration of total 233 hours 55 minutes flight in the categories "Absolute World Record for ballooning" as well as World Record in the sub-classes AM-14 and AM-15.
Our delegate and Vice President of CIA, Mr. Jakob Burkard, will give more details of our nomination including a short presentation during the CIA-Meeting 2000.
We kindly ask you for a favourable examination of our nomination.
Best regards

The Japan Aeronautic Association hereby nominates
Mr. Masashi KAKUDA
As a candidate for the Montgolfier Diploma

To the development of the sport of Ballooning
A board member of the Nippon Kikyu Renmei (Balloon Federation of Japan) since 1978, CIA Alternated Delegate for Japan since 1988 and CIA Rules Subcommittee member since 1990, Masashi KAKUDA is an indispensable figure in the Japanese and International ballooning world.
His career began when he organised a ballooning club as a college student at Hiroshima University, followed by making a self-designed balloon.

1999 MONTGOLFIER DIPLOMA NOMINATION
(Contribution to the Sport of Ballooning)
Proposed by the Royal Aero Club of the United Kingdom/BBAC
Candidate: Norman Pritchard
Address: 75 Albany Road, Old Windsor, Berkshire, SIA 2QD
CITATION
Norman Pritchard has been involved with balloons and airships for over 25 years and has been an active member of the British Balloon and Airship Club since he bought his own balloon in
1973.
He has worked as an official at many hot air balloon competitions as observer and debriefer. These include 20 British Grand Prix and National Championships, 16 World or Continental Championships and 20 other championships (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Battle Creek, Saga, World Air Games) and airship championships. When not working as a member of the official team at championships he will often be found crewing for, among others, David Bareford.
Norman has also acted as observer for many record attempts including Per Lindstrand and Richard Branson's round-the-world projects.
He has served on a number of committees including the CIA observer subcommittee and Records subcommittee and is a member of the BBAC Records and Awards subcommittee. He is the administrator for the Silver, Gold, Diamond badge scheme both in the UK and internationally.
He has had an active involvement in the British Balloon Museum and Library and has written two reference books - one on the history of UK balloon competitions and one on World and British records.
Norman Pritchard's and unassuming nature, combined with his problem-free efficiency at getting things done, seem to be the reasons why his very exceptional contribution to the running of our sport has received little recognition until now. For that reason the BBAC has pleasure in nominating him for Montgolfier Diploma for contribution to the sport.
