FAI AVIATION and SPACE EDUCATION COMMISSION C.I.E.A

The C.I.E.A Meeting was held in the new building of the Aero Club of Italy in Rome on March 29, 30 and 31 2001.

Mr. Raymond J. Johnson was the Chairman of the meeting to which took part Mr. Max Bishop, FAI Secretary General (and CIGA President of Honour) and Delegates from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA (21 people).

The main reports and topics carried out were:

FAI report - Mr. Max Bishop reported on FAI Activities in the past year.

The CIEA President Mr. Johnson reported on bureau’s activity and all delegates made reports on their national activity.

CIEA WORKING PROJECTS

World air games youth camp was organised in Burgas - Spain from June 24 to July 1. Activities include paragliding with Instructors.

- Aviation space youth camps; Many countries are holding youth camps now there is a growing interest and this could be a growth area for youth involvement in aviation education. The goal is to motivate kids to go further into aviation. - Recommended museum program Mr. Thomas reported that there had been no new museums last year. In future all new museums must be approved by CIEA and then the new FAI executive board will approve C1EA's recommendations. The delegates have to keep an eye on the museum in their country to make sure they are still doing youth programs.

- New emerging air sports e cyber flying

A report was made on new emerging air sports including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV in the Sporting Code) – parascending – kite flying – model hot air balloons – powered paraglider trikes – free fly parachuting and fly surfing. Sports like these tend to interest young people.

CASI is responsible for monitoring these sports. The Aeroclub de France will host a mailing list for the people in each country interested in these new sports. Parascending is not recognised as such, as in FAI it is the landing that is scored, not how the parachute is put in air. Austria will not recognise kite flying and feels we should be careful about deciding just what is an air sport.

- Cyber flying

There was an organised effort for cyber-fling in many countries promoted by local groups, publications and manufacturers. This is an attractive activity for young people who are experienced with computers and much cheaper than real flight. Perhaps it is too early to determine if this is an end to itself and perhaps cyber-flying should only be monitored for the present.

- Young artist contest:

The theme for 2001 was "my dream to fly". (16 countries participated this year!) The winners were,

Group I (ages 6-9) 1st place - FERNANDO SEGURE-CALVET (Spain)

Group II (ages 10-13 1st place - MARIE BOLLER (USA)

Group III (ages 14-17) 1st place - BETHANY COBB (USA)

The theme approved for the 2002 is "silent flight"

- We created three discussion groups to discuss the topic "the role of the CIEA within the FAI".

The most important motions that were approved are:

- the CIEA web site and e-mail list (ciea.com.iefai.org) will be to main method of communication for CIEA's activities.
-Each delegate will supply information on youth activities in their counties to the secretary for inclusion on the web site.
-The only contest that CIEA will sponsor will be the young artist contest.
-CIEA encourages the inclusion of a youth project both at world championships and the world air games.
-Each delegate will find a museum in their country to join the FAI recommended museum program.
-The President will investigate having the delegates each adopt a different air sport commission
