News from the 2003 Jury Board meeting in France

  1. Please note that FAI Statutes, Bylaws, Sporting Code General Section and Section 1 all have been updated. The new versions are available for downloading from the FAI and CIA web pages. The address to the CIA documents page is:  http://www.fai.org/ballooning/ciadocs.asp

There will also be a new Competition Handbook with penalty guidelines.

  2. The following new jurors were approved:
    - Alexander Gruber, Austria
    - Danny Sherrill, USA

  3. The following jurors were upgraded to Intermediate level:
    - Bruce Comstock, USA
    - Danny Galbraith, Australia
  4. New procedure for sending the CIA package to event organisers. Until now it has been sent from CIA direct to event organisers. This has not worked well. One reason has been that the address given by the organisers sometimes has not worked until the event has started. From now on the package will be sent to the Jury Chairman or to an address decided by the Jury Chairman who will be responsible for handing over the package to the organisers.

The package consists of medals, diplomas, CIA flag and tapes with national anthems.
  5. A new version of the Jury Handbook will be produced. The new version will be 7/2003. Printing error corrections, address changes for the jury board and following new pages:
    - New page with Elbow and Angle task calculation
    - New pages with tables for check of scoring programmes (benchmark test).
    - List of standard penalty explanations on notes at task result sheets.

The new Jury Handbook will be published on the CIA Jury webpage. We will also publish some small but helpful calculation programs for calculation of Land Run, Elbow and Angle tasks and a program to calculate Great Circle distances. I will let you know when the handbook and the calculation programs are available.
  6. All CIA delegates have been asked to review the list of jurors and to check if jurors from their nations are still active and members in good standing of their NAC’s or should be removed from the list. This is one of the basic requirements for initial application and also for continued service as a juror. Some delegates have already made this review.
  7. The Jury Board for the coming year will have the following composition:
    Chairman: Hans Åkerstedt, Sweden
Members: Masashi Kakuda, Japan, Les purfield, Great Britain, Alex Nagorski, Canada and Jean Claude Weber, Luxembourg.

Hans Åkerstedt, Jury Board Chairman
12 March 2003
