Sky Leisure Japan '05, Noda (JPN)



Supported by the Civil Aviation Bureau of the Ministery of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, the Sky Leisure Japan (SLJ) is the JAA's (Japan Aeronautic Association) largest annual air sports event held in various cities in Japan, and the only sky sports event where public can see all kinds of air sports officially sanctioned by Japan Aeronautic Association.


Originally started in 1989, this year's event (the 17th Sky Leisure Japan) was held at the Sekiyado Soaring Center in Noda, a city located one hour from Tokyo.

A total of 58'000 spectators envoyed various air exhibitions performed by 113 aircraft, including aerobatics, gliders, microlights, gyroplanes, powered paragliders, helicopters and aeromodels. In the evening, five balloons were moored and illuminated during a fireworks display, in cooperation with the local Sekiyado Festival, which attracted some 48'000 people.

Some 1500 children attended aeromodelling handicrafts classes, or experienced activities such as moored balloon flights, helicopter rides, or getting in the harness of hanggliders or paragliders.

The event was opened with a parachuting demonstration displaying a large FAI flag, and the FAI Centenary logo was displayed on various promotional material such as posters, pamphlets or banners, and the FAI flags were flown on the main stage during the event. Mr Hideo Hirasawa, FAI Executive Director, signed a welcome message in the official brochure, and an FAI tent was set up with panels discribing the history and role of FAI. Winning drawings of the Japanese FAI Young Artists Contest were also displayed, and an "FAI Quiz" was organized, allowing some 40 children to win prizes.
