The FAI Environmental Commission (EnvC) has established the Angelo d’Arrigo Diploma, a new FAI environmental award which aims at recognising and promoting major contributions in the field of environmental and sustainable development, in accordance with the development of a philosophy and a vision of sport aviation that increasingly wants to be respectful of the environment that surrounds it.

The FAI has today ratified the three world records claimed by Solar Impulse pilot André Borschberg from Switzerland, following a performance flight achieved on 23 May 2013 from Phoenix to Dallas (USA).

Solar Impulse completed its journey across America using solely solar energy. This achievement was made on the occasion of the Across America Mission which aimed at flying Solar Impulse from the West to the East coast of USA in 5 legs without using fuel.

After the San Francisco (California) to Phoenix (Arizona) and Phoenix to Dallas (Texas) flights, Solar Impulse is now ready for the third leg of its Across America Mission, from Dallas to St. Louis (Missouri). Take-off is scheduled for today 4am local time (11am Swiss time) and landing for tomorrow 1am local time (8am Swiss time).

The solar-powered airplane Solar Impulse, which departed on 22 May from Phoenix (Arizona), reached Dallas (Texas) yesterday morning, thus achieving a flight that might prove to be the longest flight (Straight distance, pre-declared waypoints) ever made with 1’541 km.

On 3 May, Solar Impulse, the Swiss solar-powered aircraft, will take off from San Francisco, USA, at 6:00 local time (15:00 CEST).
Bertrand Piccard, the initiator of the Solar Impulse project, will pilot the airplane from San Francisco, California, to Phoenix, Arizona. This will be the first leg of the coast-to-coast flights across the USA. It is expected to land tomorrow around 1:00 local time (the estimated flight duration is 19 hours).

The FAI has today announced that the Human Powered Aircraft (HPA) Icarus Cup 2013 has been sanctioned by the FAI as an FAI 2nd Category Event. This is the very first time that this sport has featured in the FAI Events Calendar.
