Main decisions taken at the 2013 CIAM Annual Meeting

CIAM logoThe 2013 Annual Meeting of the FAI Aeromodelling Commission (CIAM) was held on 19 and 20 April 2013 in Lausanne, Switzerland. This year saw a particularly high number of delegates and a total attendance of around 90 people.

The Memorandum of Understanding between CIAM and FAME (FAI Air Sports Marketing and Events SA) was signed on Friday afternoon in front of the Delegates.
CIAM President Antonis Papadopoulos said, "As CIAM President I am very pleased to start the cooperation with FAME. It is really important for CIAM to launch this project since it will offer many new opportunities to make our activity more interesting for the public and more attractive for the participants. FAME expertise will guide us to develop new events the way the public and the sponsors are looking for, rather than using existing ones and trying to adjust them."

Friday evening’s Open Forum discussion included:

  • reducing the number of championships, including a moratorium on new championships or combining several into one event.
  • new formats of championships which were more attractive to media and also new participants
  • prohibiting the use of technical aids (gyros, telemetry etc.) when it was considered that most young flyers enjoy the use of such technology. Resisting change and remaining with long time existing regulations was seen as a barrier to new entrants
  • Several delegates, not least AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) President Bob BROWN, emphasised the need to adopt a new approach to championships and competitions in order to encourage new participants and attract more attention to these events

Electronic voting was used for the first time successfully and allowed a significant gain of time.
Papadopoulos said, "The system proved to be very efficient, especially so for votings where many rounds were needed. Compared to the system used in the previous years (paper slips), the difference is like day and night, if I can say so. Just an example, last year we needed 4 rounds of voting to award the CIAM Aeromodelling Gold medal with 6 candidates and we spent close to 1 hour and a half. This year with the same number of candidates and the same number of rounds, we hardly needed 10 minutes."

Besides the sporting code proposals that were adopted, here are the main decisions that were taken during the meeting:
