The 2012 Annual Meeting of the FAI Aeromodelling Commission (CIAM) was held on 20 and 21 April 2012 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Antonis Papadopoulos from Greece was elected President of the CIAM. "Aero and Space Modelling are very fascinating air sports which attract a lot of people, especially youngsters. As the President of the FAI Aeromodelling Commission, I will strive together with the Bureau members and the concerned National Airsport Controls to do all that is possible to promote our sport all over the world," Mr. Papadopoulos said after his election.

In celebration of the 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF SPACEMODELLING IN THE FAI, organisations and individuals that have greatly contributed to the development of this activity have been awarded the "50th Anniversary of Spacemodelling in the FAI Diploma".
The Awards Ceremony took place on Friday 20 April 2012 in Lausanne, Switzerland, in the presence of FAI President John Grubbström who had the pleasure of distributing the diplomas to the recipients, together with CIAM Space Modelling Sub-committee Chairman Srdjan Pelagic.

All beginnings are easy – but nevertheless potentially risky.
The new generation of ready-built model aeroplanes and helicopters – mostly made from foam materials – make aeromodelling easily accessible for everyone. While getting started is easy, a few safety issues must nevertheless be considered. These include insurance, legal regulations, handling of technology and flying itself.

This year, the European Championships in indoor flying were once more held in Belgrade. While flights in many model flying competition categories are getting increasingly faster, longer and higher, indoor free-flight is dominated by a real slow-down culture.
This does not at all mean that these models' competition flights are any less thrilling and attractive. On the contrary – the silently circling small aeroplanes with their slowly rotating propellers fascinate everyone.

Jean-Marc Badan, the previous FAI Sports Director and Deputy to the Secretary General, has been appointed as the new Secretary General of the FAI – the International Air Sports Federation. He will formally take up his appointment in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 1st October 2011.

The Archaeopteryx Story - from Primeval Bird to a Glider Plane that can be Launched on Foot.
The flying capabilities of the Archaeopteryx – or primeval bird as it is also called – are disputed in modern palaeontology. Meantime, numerous fossils of bird-like dinosaurs have been discovered. Whether Archaeopteryx's flying attempts were only gliding flights or whether it could actually take off from the ground remains unclear.
What is certain, however, is that the glider "Archaeopteryx", built by two aeroplane designers, can be launched on foot from any slope or mountain, weighs only 50 kg and has excellent flight characteristics.
