All entries must be made to Your Organizing FAI Member Country by their deadline. Click on the above link for the address of your member country.

The Theme for the 2010 Contest is :

"Flying with the Sun"

The FAI is particularly concerned with all forms of sporting and recreational aviation, including:

  • BALLOONING, GLIDING and PARACHUTING
  • AEROBATICS
  • HANG - GLIDING and PARAGLIDING
  • MICROLIGHT / ULTRALIGHT FLYING
  • MODEL AIRCRAFT
  • LIGHT AIRCRAFT and HELICOPTER FLYING

FAI Member organisations are responsible for making arrangements in each country for a national competition, or similar process of selection, for young people resident in their countries. Some guidelines on how to organise this are also attached. We recommend that the prizes for winners of national competitions should include visits to sport aviation airports and museums, and if possible flights in light aircraft, gliders or balloons. Each FAI Member organisation may submit to FAI a maximum of 9 paintings (3 in each years of birth category).

All entries must be received at the FAI Office by 12 April 2010 at the following address :

Entries will be judged by an International Jury. The winners in each age group will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals, together with diplomas. These medals and diplomas will be sent to the FAI Member organisations in the appropriate countries as soon as possible after judging is completed. The FAI delegates from the countries concerned will be responsible for arranging a suitable occasion for the presentation of the awards.

Entries, once received by FAI will become and remain the property of FAI, which may use them for a variety of purposes. FAI Members are therefore encouraged to make good quality colour copies of their winners' work for public relations purposes before sending the entries to Lausanne.

  • Eligibility. All children in the age groups shown below are encouraged to participate in the Contest, even if they are related to officials or employees of the FAI or any of its member organisations. Participation in the National contests is limited to residents of that country.

     
  • Age Groups. Entries will be judged in 3 classes :
    • Group I - Junior Category (Date of birth between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2003).
    • Group II - Intermediate Category (Date of birth between 1 January 1996 and 31 December 1999).
    • Group III - Senior Category (Date of birth between 1 January 1992 and 31 December 1995).

     

  • Format. The required format is A3 (297 x 420 mm or 11 3/4 X 16 ½ inches) or, if this is unobtainable in your country, the nearest possible equivalent.

    Artwork must not be framed or outlined with borders.

     

  • Medium. All artwork must be done by hand (or, in the case of handicapped children, by foot or mouth). Any of the following media are permitted:
    • Watercolor
    • Acrylic
    • Oil paint
    • Indelible marker pens
    • Felt-tip pens
    • Soft ball-point pens
    • Indelible ink
    • Crayola, or any similar indelible medium

     
    The following media are NOT permitted :

    No pencil, charcoal or other non-permanent medium may be used.

    No computer-generated artwork is permitted.

    No collage work involving the use of photocopies is permitted.

     

  • Markings. The following details should be clearly shown on the back of art:
    • Title
    • Family name
    • Given name
    • Address
    • Date of birth
    • Country of residence
    • Name and address of school which child attends
    • Certificate of Authenticity

     

  • Title. There is no need for a title on the poster and entrants can decide for themselves whether or not to include one; however there should be a clearly recognisable link to the theme of the contest.

     
  • Certificate of Authenticity. The Certificate is to be worded as follows:

    "I/We certify that this is the original and unassisted work of ............... (name of entrant)".

    We certify that ............... (name of entrant) is a resident of ............... (name of country).

    Certificates are to be signed by the entrant's teacher, or other suitable person.


     

  • Address for Entries. All entries are to be sent to the organising authority in each FAI Member country, and not direct to the FAI. Only entries sent by FAI Members, and which arrive in Lausanne by the closing date of 12 April 2010, will be considered by the International Jury.

Interpretation of the 2010 theme - "Flying with the Sun"

In Greek mythology, the boy Icarus flew too close to the sun and the wax holding his feathered wings together melted. Since then, girls and boys have built their own kites and toy gliders to safely soar in the sky. These girls and boys have grown up to be the women and men who learned to harness the power of the sun for flight. As paragliders and glider pilots, they soar like hawks higher and higher, using air heated by the sun, called thermals, to rise high in the sky. They take balloons across the countryside and across continents. With new solar technology, pilots and engineers are expanding flight into a new world of possibilities.

Space explorers have been using solar energy for many years for power in space stations and satellites. That technology, together with highly advanced electric motors and batteries has returned to earth for improved flight. What new sun-powered combinations between sports aviation, passenger aircraft, and space technology are waiting to take you to the skies in the future ?

Already, solar flyers like the Icare II and Sunseeker are pushing the limits of what gliders can do. The SolarImpulse project might soon push these limits further : To fly a solar-powered aircraft around the world. Not only are they creating a whole new category for solar-powered craft distance and height records to break, they are paving the way for new, fuel efficient ways to fly that take into account how important it is to use energy resources responsibly.

Imagine what the skies would look like in the future as these new technologies merge with traditional solar fliers and take to the air. How will we travel and play in the solar-powered skies ?

Note explicative sur le thème 2010 - "Voler avec le soleil"

Dans la mythologie grecque, le jeune Icare vola si près du soleil que la cire qui maintenait les plumes de ses ailes fondit. Depuis, de nombreux cerfs-volants ou modèles-réduits d’aéronefs construits par de jeunes enthousiastes se sont élevés dans les airs en toute sécurité. Ces jeunes enthousiastes ont grandi et sont devenus les adultes qui ont appris à exploiter l’énergie du soleil pour voler. Que ce soit en tant que pilotes de parapentes ou de planeurs, ils savent utiliser, comme les faucons, les bulles d’air chauffé par le soleil - les ascendances thermiques - pour s’élever de plus en plus haut dans le ciel, ou pour emmener des ballons à travers les continents. En utilisant les nouvelles technologies solaires, pilotes et ingénieurs ont ouvert le domaine du vol à de nouveaux horizons.

Pendant de nombreuses années, l’exploration spatiale a utilisé l’énergie solaire pour faire fonctionner stations spatiales et satellites. Reliées à des batteries et à des moteurs électriques performants, les technologies solaires sont revenues sur terre et contribuent au développement du vol. Qui sait quelles nouvelles synergies entre technologies spatiales, aviation sportive et commerciale nous attendent à l’avenir et te permettront de t’élever dans le ciel ?

Aujourd’hui déjà, des aéronefs tels que l’Icare II ou le Sunseeker ont repoussé les limites des appareils à propulsion solaire. Bientôt, le projet SolarImpulse franchira encore de nouvelles étapes pour accomplir un rêve : voler autour du monde grâce à l’énergie solaire. Si ces projets offrent certes de nouvelles opportunités de battre des records d’altitude ou de distance, ils permettent avant tout d’ouvrir de nouvelles voies à une utilisation plus rationnelle et responsable des sources d’énergie dans le domaine du vol humain.

Ta tâche consiste maintenant à imaginer à quoi ressemblera le ciel du futur, lorsque ces nouvelles technologies solaires te permettront aussi de voler. Comment voyagerons-nous ? Comment jouerons-nous avec la troisième dimension à bord de ces aéronefs à propulsion solaire ? Prends ton matériel de dessin préféré, laisse libre cours à ton imagination et montre-nous par un dessin comment tu rêves de « Voler avec le soleil ».
