FAI News 07/07Annual Meetings of FAI Commissions : CIACA, CIEA, ICARE CIACA PLENARY MEETING The FAI Amateur Built & Experimental Commission (CIACA) held its Annual Plenary Meeting on 20 April 2007 in Rome (ITA). The Phoenix Group Diploma was awarded to Messrs Hansruedi DUBLER, Max VOGELSANG and Peter ZWEIFEL (SUI) for the restoration of a Morane-Saulnier MS-406 which, after over 10’000 hours of work, is the only one flying in the world. Participation in the World Air Games 2009 CIACA confirmed its intention to play a significant role in the success of the World Air Games 2009. The program of CIACA activities will be adapted to the level of knowledge and experience available in the host country, but one of the most attractive projects will be the public construction of a (kit) plane : An international construction team will start working at the beginning of the Games, and the aircraft should make its first flight on the last day of the event. Elections Mr Pierluigi DURANTI (ITA) was re-elected as CIACA President, Mme Catherine DARTOIS (FRA) and Mr Karl RÖNN (SWE) as 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents and Mrs Elaine FECHER (GER) as Secretary. Next Plenary Meeting 18 April 2008, Lausanne (SUI) "WAVE-RIDERS OF THE ANDES” ON AIR A 52-minute TV report entitled "Wave-Riders of the Andes" ("Die Windreiter der Anden" / " Les Enragés du vol à voile") will be broadcast on the Franco-German channel Arte-TV on Saturday, 12 May 2007 at 21:35 CET. CIEA PLENARY MEETING / FAI YOUNG ARTISTS CONTEST The FAI Aviation & Space Education Commission (CIEA) held its Annual Plenary Meeting on 27 and 28 April 2007 in Limerick (IRL). New Generations One of the main topics of the Meeting was the "Generations Issue", or how to attract young people to aviation and air sports in today’s complex and fast developing “virtual world”. On the basis of the interesting presentations and exchanges of experience held during the Meeting, CIEA Officers will work out a list of recommendations that will help our aero clubs to involve youngsters more in their activities. FAI Young Artists Contest The International Jury met in Limerick to determine the Winners of the 2007 Contest, whose theme was "Airfield". The theme of the 2008 Contest is "Design an Aviation Stamp"; updated rules and interpretation of the theme will be published on CIEA Webpages as soon as available. Elections Mr Michiel KASTELEIJN (NED) was re-elected as CIEA President and Mr Gordon HOFF (USA) as 1st Vice President, while Mr Michael MAHON (IRL) and Charles-Henri THEODOLOZ (SUI) were newly elected 2nd Vice President and Secretary (Click here for the full List of CIEA Officers and Delegates). In recognition for the many years she has dedicated to CIEA, Comtessa Maria Fede CAPRONI (ITA) was awarded the honorary title of Vice President of Honour. Next Plenary Meeting 24 to 26 April 2008, Moscow (RUS) PRINCE A. DE ORLEANS BORBON PRIZE AWARDED TO THE "FLARM" TEAM At the recent Friedrichshafen AERO sport aviation fair, the team that developed the "FLARM" anti-collision device, now installed on many gliders and light aircraft, received the Prince Alvaro de Orleans Borbon Prize for technical innovation in air sports. The members of the team from Switzerland that developed FLARM, Urban MÄDER, Urs ROTHACHER and Andrea SCHLAPBACH, were recognised by the Trustees of the Prince Alvaro de Orleans Borbon Prize Fund as having made "a great contribution to the improvement of safety in air sport". ICARE PLENARY MEETING The FAI Astronautic Records Commission (ICARE) held its Annual Plenary Meeting on 27 April 2007 in Lausanne (SUI). Awards The Yuri Gagarin Gold Medal was awarded to the crews of Space Shuttle Mission STS-121 and International Space Station (ISS) Expedition 13 for the successful completion of their mission consisting of testing new equipment and procedures, restoring the ISS to a three-person crew, and focusing on assembly preparations, maintenance and microgravity science. The V.M. Komarov Diploma was awarded to the crew of ISS Expedition 12 for the successful completion of U.S. and Russian Extravehicular Activities (EVAs), and for docking their Soyuz to all ports of the ISS. The crew of STS-115 Space Shuttle mission, which resumed assembly of the ISS after a hiatus of four years, was also awarded The Komarov Diploma. The Korolev Diploma was awarded to the crews of ISS Expedition 10 and STS-116 Space Shuttle mission for the successful installation of the P5 truss segment, critical rewiring of the ISS, and configuring the solar arrays allowing for future assembly operations. Elections Dr Sanz Fernandez de CORDOBA was re-elected as ICARE President and Mr John MILES (GBR) as Vice President, as well as ICARE representative to the FAI Aviation & Space Education Commission.
