CIG commemorates FAI Centenary

To mark the FAI's Centenary, a formation of three helicopters with 12 people on board left Rouen (FRA) on Sunday 21 August 2005, after the closing ceremony of the 12th FAI World Helicopter Championship, to fly to the FAI Headquarters in Lausanne.

En route, when passing abeam Paris, they saluted FAI's birthplace. The formation comprised a Swiss-registered Robinson R-44 and two aircraft from Germany, a Eurocopter EC-120 and a Hughes 500. All the pilots were World Championship team members with great experience, enabling them to negotiate the Jura mountains in bad weather safely and succesfully.

The link between 1905 and 2005 was symbolised by displaying the old and the new FAI flags, signed by all participating crew members.

Present at a rainy La Blécherette Airport in Lausanne to greet the crews was Mr Jean-Jacques Schilt, the Municipal Councillor responsible for sport and former Mayor of Lausanne at the time FAI moved to the city in 1998. At a dinner given in his honour, FAI Rotorcraft Commission (CIG) President David Hamilton presented a commemorative trophy to Mr Schilt (made from a piece of helicopter rotor-blade) in recognition of the City's great support for sporting aviation and for FAI and helicopter sport.

Participating pilots and crew members were : H. Gesang, M. Stoschek, G. Zimmer, L. Oehler, M. Bruns (GER); J.-D. Berthod, A. Kollep, C. Chatelan, N. Sapin (SUI). CIG President David Hamilton, New Zealand CIG Delegate Roger Gault and FAI Secretary General Max Bishop were also on board for the centenary flight.

The new World Helicopter Champion is Vladimir Zyablikov (RUS) with his crew member Vladimir Gladchenko, and the Women's World Champion is Caroline Gough-Cooper (GBR) with her crew member Imogen Asker.

Pour marquer le centenaire de la FAI, une patrouille de trois hélicoptères avec 12 personnes à bord a quitté Rouen (FRA) le dimanche 21 août 2005, après la cérémonie de clôture du 12ème championnat du monde d'hélicoptère, pour rejoindre le siège social de la FAI à Lausanne.

Lors de leur passage au travers de la ville de Paris, les hélicoptères ont salué le lieu de naissance de la FAI. La patrouille était composée d'un Robinson R-44 enregistré en Suisse et de deux hélicoptères venant d'Allemagne, un Eurocopter EC-120 et un Hughes 500. Tous les pilotes étaient membres des équipes participantes au championnat du monde; leur grande expérience leur a permis de négocier la chaîne du Jura en toute sécurité, malgré les mauvaises conditions météorologiques qui régnaient ce jour-là.

Le lien entre 1905 et 2005 était symbolisé par la présence de l'ancien et du nouveau drapeau de la FAI, signés par tous les participants.

A l'arrivée des hélicoptères à l'aéroport de la Blécherette à Lausanne, c'est sous une pluie battante que les équipages ont été accueillis par M. Jean-Jacques Schilt, conseiller municipal responsable du sport; M. Schilt était le maire de Lausanne lorsque la FAI s'y est installé en 1998. Lors d'un dîner donné en son honneur, David Hamilton, Président de la Commission de giraviation de la FAI (CIG) a remis un trophée commémoratif à M. Schilt (réalisé à partir d'un tronçon de rotor d'hélicoptère) en reconnaissance du grand soutien que la ville offrait à l'aviation sportive, à la FAI et au sport hélicoptère.

Les pilotes et équipages étaient constitués de : H. Gesang, M. Stoschek, G. Zimmer, L. Oehler, M. Bruns (GER); J.-D. Berthod, A. Kollep, C. Chatelan, N. Sapin (SUI). Le délégué CIG de la Nouvelle-Zélande, M. Roger Gault, ainsi que le Président de la CIG M. David Hamilton et le sécrétaire général de la FAI Max Bishop étaient également à bord pour ce vol du centenaire.

Le nouveau champion du monde d'hélicoptère est Vladimir Zyablikov (RUS) avec son équipier Vladimir Gladchenko, tandis que la nouvelle championne du monde s'appelle Caroline Gough-Cooper (GBR) avec son équipière Imogen Asker.




Obituary / Nécrologie

The FAI regrets to announce the death of its former President, Prince Antoine de Ligne.
Having received his pilot’s licence from the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1944, Prince Antoine de Ligne became an instructor, first with the RAF itself, then with the Belgian Air Force. He piloted Austers in Palestine and Israel in 1948 for the UN, and went on to fly aeroplanes and helicopters for 14 months in 1958 as part of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition. Also the owner and pilot of hot air balloons, he was for several years President of the Royal Belgian Aero Club, and FAI President in 1981 and 1982.

On behalf of the entire air sports community, FAI President Pierre Portmann expresses his sincere condolences to Princess de Ligne and her family.


La FAI a le regret d'annoncer le décès du Prince Antoine de Ligne, ancien Président de la FAI.
Après avoir reçu sa licence de pilote auprès de la Royal Air Force (RAF) en 1944, le Prince Antoine de Ligne devint un instructeur de vol, initialement auprès de la RAF, puis auprès des Forces aériennes belges. En 1948, il pilota des Austers en Palestine et en Israël pour le compte des Nations-Unies. En 1958, il participa pendant 14 mois à l'expédition belge dans l'Antarctique en tant que pilote d'avions et d'hélicoptères. Egalement pilote et propriétaire de ballons à air chaud, il fut pendant de nombreuses années Président de l'Aéro-Club Royal de Belgique puis, en 1981 et 1982, Président de la FAI.

Au nom de toute la communauté des sports aériens, le Président de la FAI, Pierre Portmann, formule ses sincères condoléances à la Princesse de Ligne et à sa famille.
