OLC Specialist Information
to Delegates and NAC's
April 30th, 2006

Dear Friends,

IGC wishes to announce the creation of the

IGC-OLC World League.

The OLC-League is expanding to include more countries in 2006. As a result, the IGC will provide an additional Top-League for the 3 first placed teams of each round of the National Leagues. This will give the participating aero clubs / sporting groups an additional platform for comparison and press coverage.

This interesting decentralised soaring competition is based on the OLC Classic and no additional procedure is necessary to claim flights. It will be offered in the following countries (at the moment only northern hemisphere):

- Austria
- Canada
- Czech Republic *
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Netherlands
- Slovakia*
- Switzerland
- United States of America

(* Czech Republic and Slovakia are scored together in one OLC – league)

A short summary of the key soring rules:

1.)Scoring time is a time window of 2,5 hours out of every flight, that is submitted to OLC.
2.)Start altitude must be equal or lower than the finish altitude
3.)Maximum 4 legs are allowed
4.)Minimum scoring average must be equal or greater than 20 km/h, after application of the DAEC handicap
5.)The sum of the 3 top average speeds per team are used for scoring
6.)No additional flight claim is needed, all calculations are performed by the OLC server automatically

The only difference to the OLC Classic is that a club participating in the contest must define a home airfield.
Only flights departing from this home airfield will be scored.

Why is an OLC team bound to a single take-off site ?

The OLC makes it very easy to create an OLC club or group of interest for which the flights are submitted. For the OLC league it would of course be beneficial to have a club which is located in three or more different weather regions. This would allow them to compete and submit flights to the OLC league with almost any weather. Competing against such a group would be unfair and boring. The only way to avoid such special interest groups is that the team competing in the OLC League has to decide before the start of the OLC League from which take-off site they like to compete and only flights originating from this site will be scored.

Rules for IGC-OLC World League 2006

1. Goals

The IGC – OLC World-League system is achieved by using a round based formula-one scoring. It allows the clubs to compete in a league system where the positions can change during the whole season based on the relative formula-one scoring. Like in other sports this is a very exciting competition and the decision who will be champion can come down to the last round of the year.
Base for scoring is an OLC-Sprint task which is to be flown in a 2 ½ hour weather window. The optimum weather window for the sprint task is automatically being calculated by the OLC software based on the submitted IGC-file.

2. Participants

The IGC – OLC World - League is a team competition for clubs who participate in their relevant National OLC - Leagues .The 5 top ranked clubs of each round from each participating National OLC-League , will be scored in the World -League according to their achieved round speed.

3. Home airfield

Every club that wants to participate in the IGC – OLC World - League, must define a home airfield for their team in their National OLC League. Flights for the IGC – OLC World League will only be scored, when the point of departure is the defined home airfield. A List of Clubs / home airfield will be published in the OLC-website. Every club can change its home airfield before the first round of the IGC - OLC World -League.

4. Formula-one scoring

Each round the sum of the three fastest XC speeds on the OLC sprint task per club will be scored. The speeds will be index corrected according the gliders handicap. This sum is called the IGC-OLC World -League-average-speed per round'. The clubs are ranked in a list according the achieved 'IGC-OLC World -.League-average-speed per round'. The club with the highest speed receives 2 IGC-OLC World - League points for each participating club in this round to a maximum of 20 points. The following clubs ranked 'n' receive 'n-1' points, but each participating club receives at least one point per round.

5. Publishing

The result of each round as well as the total up to date scoring will be published each Thursday 24:00 h MESZ on the FAI server .The results of the single rounds are always available and the total scoring is continued with every round.

6. Rules for the IGC/OLC Sprint task

6.1 Task distance and altitude difference

The OLC Software is optimizing the sprint task according the following rules based on the recorded flight track:
- The sprint start, up to three sprint turn points, as well as the sprint end will be positioned so that the total distance around these points are the longest.
- The sprint end can be a maximum of 150 minutes after the sprint start.
- The flight from sprint start to sprint end has to be in engine less flight.
- The submitted sprint start and sprint end have to be points from the flight track.
- The sprint start can not be higher than the sprint end.
- The sprint start altitude is the lowest altitude after engine less flight/release from tow and before reaching the sprint start.
- Sprint start is the time when sprint start altitude has been reached.
- Sprint arrival height is the altitude after reaching the Sprint end point.
- The sprint end is before the end of the flight.
- Sprint end is the time when the sprint arrival height has been reached.

6.2 Scoring

The average speed of the single flight is the sum of the distances from sprint start, around up to three turn points, to the sprint end divided by the DAeC index, multiplied by 100 and divided by 2.5. The IGC-OLC World-League-average-speed per round for a club is calculated from the sum of the three highest average speeds of pilots of a club. Only flights with an average of min 20 km/h will be scored.
