9 WORLD GLIDING CHAMPIONSHIPS, INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

9.1 25th World Gliding Championships, in St. Auban, France, 22. June to 6. July, 1997

Jacky Clairbaux, the designated director of this event, reported:

The preparations for the 25th Gliding World Championships are well in hand. Jacky Clairbaux, who is employed full-time by the French gliding association FFVV for the championships, promised to continue the development of the European Championships in Finland, where he will be serving as steward. Also the Finish rules and scoring system - approved by IGC - will apply in France. There are already some sponsors, the organisers will make the right use of the "black boxes" to support publicity.

The great interest within the gliding community for this event is shown by the high number of preliminary entries for the international gliding contest "Lavender Glide", which will be held at St. Auban from July 23 to August 7, 1996, with one training week preceding. 115 preliminary entries have been received, 48 for the standard class, 44 for the 15 m class, and 23 for the open class.

All further information are included in the newsletter No 3 which was distributed to all delegates attending the meeting in Marly-Le-Roi and sent to all NACs that were not represented at this meeting. Newsletter No 4 together with the rules, a turn point list, and the list of the definitely registered competitors will be sent to all entered pilots in due time before the contest.

Tor Johannessen, chairman of the rules sub-committee, stated that the organisers increasingly use the rules of Annex A as they are - except some unavoidable deviations in the local regulations - while in former years all organisers tried to invent their own rules. Moreover, the attention of the designated director was drawn to the fact that organisers can allow any GNSS flight recorders, regardless if they are approved by GFAC or not.
