WAG (paragliding) PILOT QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Sierra Nevada has to be flown with great respect due to the strong conditions at this time of the year. The 2/3 rule does not allow to avoid accidents (Euro PG in Garmisch: one fatality). For these reasons the pilot qualification requirements are the following for this competition. These additional requirements have been agreed upon by the CIVL Bureau.

In addition to the requirements of Section 7 5.11 (top 2/3 or Cat 1) pilots MUST have either:

  • Finished in the top 2/3 of any PWC event, or
  • Have an FAI Eagle Gold Badge

Pilots failing to meet these criteria must produce a copy of their flight log book showing evidence of Gold Badge distance (100 km) and competition experience.

PLEASE NOTE

  • Pilots who have NOT met these qualification criteria will not be accepted
  • There will be NO exemptions for the 2/3 rule.
  • ONLY very experienced pilots with VERY exceptional circumstances will be considered for exemptions to the additional requirements. Exemptions must be applied for in writing to CIVL at least one month prior to the close of entries (full details available on the CIVL website).
  • A list of qualified pilots is available on the FAI/CIVL website www.fai.org/hang_gliding
  • Before the start of the first task the Jury and/or Steward will check that all pilots on the official list of entries are qualified, or have been given exemption from qualification. Any non-qualified pilots will not be allowed to fly the competition.
  • Any queries regarding qualification should be addressed to Paula Bowyer paula@fai.org

REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

According to Section 7 rule 23.4.2

  • The minimum team size is 2 + 1
  • The country ranking will be published 4 months before the first competition day: Feb. 19th
  • Before that date, we cannot guarantee any country to have more pilots than the minimum number: 2+1.
  • S7 rule 5.11 allows a pilot to qualify by the last day of the month preceding the event which means for World Air Games Paragliding 'Sierra Nevada' pilots have untll 31st of May 2001 to qualify.

Each Country must give 5 + 2 pilot names who meet the qualification criteria

in the order of their national selection.

In the column 'Pilot Qualification' of the Entry Form, the most recent event in which the pilot has been ranked in the top 2/3 must be shown, particularly if it is a PWC event. In addition, the Eagle Gold Badge must be mentioned if relevant. If necessary a copy of the pilot's log book must be attached according to Pilot Qualification Requirements above.

A signature (not necessarily each pilot, but the signature of a team leader or manager) will be required as confirmation that each pilot has met the qualification criteria.

During the CIVL Plenary meeting (22 - 25 February, 2001) the 1st selection round will be made.

31st March 2001 is the dead line for payment of the entry fee, after that date pilots not having paid their entry fee are considered withdrawn and the available rooms will be distributed according to 23.4.2.
