Correction to press release (21-03-2001) regarding class 2 and open class records
30 March 2001
The implementation date of the new Class 2 & Open Class definitions is applicable from 1 January 2002 for both competition and World records. Until 31 December 2001 the following definition applies: 'Class 2 are capable of foot launching and landing in nil wind conditions with the provision that in Category 1 competitions full fairings are not allowed'.
In the interim period CIVL will consult with class 2 and class 4/open class pilots. Notably, Dennis Pagen will be consulting with these pilots at the forthcoming Florida meets.
Therefore the proposal is that at 01 January 2002 'Grandfather' rights should apply with regards to current Class 2 World records and the new class definitions (Class 2 & Open Class).
Therefore at 01 January 2002 any existing Class 2 records will not be changed. However existing Class 2 records established with Open Class hang gliders (according to the new definition adopted at the 2001 Plenary meeting) before 01 January 2002 will also be recognised as valid Open Class records.
To take an example, the current Swift records established by Stewart Midwinter would therefore appear as both Class 2 and Open Class records. The new class definition will be applied to all new record claims from 01 January 2002.
