The World Pilot Ranking System (WPRS) was created in 1998. The original formula for scoring points evolved throughout the years and now list more than 8 000 pilots from 55 nations in 8 categories.
In 2005, CIVL decided to upgrade its scoring and ranking software. In February 2006, the first modifications were agreed upon by the Plenary.
From May the 23rd, the new ranking software is operative.
- All competitions, pilots and results
- Class I Hang gliding
- Class 2 Hang Gliding
- Class 5 Hang Gliding
- Paragliding
- Paragliding Accuracy
- Paragliding Aerobatics
Official rankings prior to May the 1st 2006 are available at http://www.fai.org/hang_gliding/rankings_old/ (but will not be corrected for errors).
MORE ABOUT THE NEW RANKINGS...
The formulas have not been changed and there should be very little modification in each pilot ranking.
However, there are alterations in the season parameters. The WPRS formula can be found for each discipline from http://civlrankings.fai.org/?a=304&
The new system offers many advantages:
- all competition results since 2001 are shown.
- pilots can log in, have access to their individual files and update or correct some information (spelling, address…).
- rankings and competitions can be search through many options (name, year, country, discipline…).
- rankings evolve day by day, as competition results are added.
- rankings are frozen and archived on the first of each month. They are then easily accessible.
- gradually, organisers will be able to register their competitions directly online.
- gradually, pilots will be able to enter competitions online.
PARAGLIDING AEROBATICS RANKINGS
Two different rankings in paragliding aerobatics competition are calculated.
1) The Paragliding Aerobatic World Cup (Acro Cup) is organised every year based on 4 to 6 major events chosen by the CIVL Aerobatics working group. The ranking formula is defined in chapter 7 of the Annex to Section 7B of the FAI Sporting code but is an annual ranking. All the competitions in the Paragliding Acro World Cup are to be Category 2 events and will therefore count in the permanent ranking (WPRS). Where there are too few spaces available for competing pilots, the top-ranked pilots in the WPRS will have priority to compete in these events. The 2008 Paragliding Acro World Cup final results and rankings can be found at: http://www.fai.org/hang_gliding/aerobatic
2) A permanent ranking based on the formula of the World Aerobatic Pilot Ranking. It takes into account competitions over the previous 3 years. This formula and its explanations are available at the following address: http://civlrankings.fai.org/?a=326&ladder_id=6. All the international aerobatics events including those counting for the Acro Cup will be taken into account for this permanent ranking provided they are sanctioned as FAI Cat 2 events. This ranking will give points to all the pilots competing in an event and could be used for selection purposes. In Cat 2 events other than Acro Cup, if there are too many pilots, selection will be made by a qualification run.
