The FAI Commission Internationale de Micro-Aviation (CIMA) was formed in 1981 at the 75th General Conference in Tokyo (JPN).
The Microlight Working Group, then a sub-committee, had its first meeting on Tuesday 17th February 1981 at the Aéroclub de France in Paris (FRA). Its President, Ann Welch (GBR) had written to CASI, the FAI Air Sport General Commission, asking for the creation of a new Commission to cater for microlights.

The official Commission, CIMA, first met on Tuesday 17th November 1981 at the FAI Headquarters in Paris.
