Solar Impulse - Virtual Flight 2007Solar Impulse - Virtual Flight 200780 YEARS LATER ...

On 21st May 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh landed the “Spirit of St-Louis” at Le Bourget (Paris), completing the first solo, non-stop flight across the North Atlantic Ocean. Exactly 80 years after this great achievement, the Solar Impulse Team took off from Hawaii for a virtual flight to Florida on-board a solar-powered virtual airplane.

The construction of the Solar Impulse prototype has just begun

(www.solarimpulse.com). To realise the challenging idea of flying a solar-powered aircraft around the world, many innovative technologies have to be applied and thoroughly tested. The main objectives of this year’s virtual flight are, using completely new simulation tools, to verify the ability of the airplane to store enough energy during the day to continue flying throughout the night; to optimize in-flight energy management; and to train the Mission Team in complex decision-making and procedures.

The progress of the flight, which ends on 25 May, may be followed on Internet at www.solarimpulsevirtualflight.com.
