The General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) held its annual congress in Singapore from 24 - 27 October 2001. All the major players in the world of sport were present, including the International Olympic Committee President, Dr Jacques Rogge, and representatives of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Organising Committee, as well as the organisers of the World Games in Duisburg, Germany (July 2005).
The FAI delegation, headed by FAI President Wolfgang Weinreich, took the opportunities presented by the congress for meetings with IOC members and other influential figures. Good progress was made in explaining why FAI believes that the Olympic Games should move into the third dimension in 2008. Skydiving is a very popular sport in China, and Chinese athletes have obtained excellent results, most recently in ther Akita World Games (one silver medal and one bronze).
As for the Duisburg World Games, planning is proceeding well, and there are high hopes that gliding (aerobatics and cross-country) may be included as well as sky-diving.
The FAI continues to play an increasingly influential role in the wider international sporting movement.
