IPC Subcommittee for Freestyle Skydiving & Skysurfing
| World Nature Games 1997 Brazil |
At the IPC meeting in February 1997 the Subcommittee Freestyle Skydiving & Skysurfing was approached by the Brazilian delegate with a very tentative proposal. The Brazilian Aeroclub, in co-operation with the state of Paraná would hoast a skysurfing competition as one of the 14 sports to be present at the World Nature Games. Skysurfing was chosen as one of them and will be most likely the major media event.
The Subcommittee proposed to the Plenary to accept this competition as an IPC 1st. category event which the Plenary accepted. As contact persons were chosen the chairman of the Subcommittee Ronald Overdijk, the Brazilian delegate Jorge Derviche and mr. Roland Hilfiker.
As this is an official IPC competition the IPC competition rules skysurfing 1997 will be used. A set of these rules will be provided with the invitations to the competitors. Official IPC judges only will be used. Roger Flinn, UK has been proposed as Chief Judge.
The preparation of this competition is progressing rapidly. The state of Paraná and Varig Airlines sponsor this event. As such specific rules for personal sponsors will be clarified in the invitation to the competitors. Brazilian TV station Globo will cover the event live and with daily summaries. An extra bonus to the competitors is prize money with a total of 22.750 USD. This is the biggest cash sum in skydiving history till present! Aircraft will be a Super Puma helicopter.
The Subcommittee prepared a list with competitors to be invited. One of the criteria is standings at the 1st. World Cup 1996 Skysurfing in Turkey. As there were just 6 entries in Turkey and there are 10 slots in Brazil further selection has been done by results of the SSI ProTour 1996 and parts of 1997. Worldwide distribution of competitors is also a relevant criteria to the organisers. As such, the Subcommittee provided a list to the Brazilians with potential and interested competitors. They will send the official invitations.
Further data will be released when availble.
