CIVL scoring changes for Category 1 Events

At the recent CIVL Plenary meeting there were some changes adopted that will affect scoring at Category 1 competitions.

The GAP scoring system to be used in Category 1 events

  • The GAP scoring system, which has been under development for some years and used in many national and international competitions, has been adopted for all FAI/CIVL Championships. In order to keep up with our advancing sports the GAP scoring system will be under constant scrutiny and development. There will be a need for occasional modifications, however in order to maintain consistency of the scoring system throughout a season, these modifications will be made on an annual basis.

CIVL would like to thank Gerolf Heinrichs, Angelo Crapanzano, and Paul Mollison (from whose initials the name was born!!) for the development of this scoring system. Also the DHV for their support with a generous donation of 50% of the development costs.

It is hoped that an increasing number of category 2 events will adopt this scoring system. To encourage competition organisers to use this scoring system the CIVL will make the complete system available on the internet (free of charge) at http://www.fai.org/hang_gliding/.

Number of Pilots contributing to Team Scores

  • To date the team scores for pilots at Category 1 events has been calculated by adding together the scores of the highest three pilots of each nationality in each task. This has now been amended to: The number of pilots counting towards the team score will be 50% of the maximum team size, rounded up to the nearest whole number with minimum of 3. (i.e. team size 4 - pilots scoring for team = 3, team size 5 - pilots scoring for team = 3, team size 6 - pilots 3, team size 7 - pilots 4, team size 8 - pilots 4 etc.).

This will come into effect from the next Hang Gliding World Championships being held in Australia January 1998.
