World Pilot Ranking System update -


The World Pilot Ranking System has just been updated.

The hang gliding rankings again see some big changes in the top 10 due to the loss of competitions over 18 months old (European Champs 1998, Women's Worlds 1998, WHGX XC Canada 1998, Wild West 1998). New competitions are Bogong Cup, Australia and Millenium Cup, Mexico. Betinho Schmitz (BR) is now in first place (235 points), Alan Barnes (GB) has dropped to 2nd ahead of Andre Wolf (BR) who has climbed from 10th to 3rd. Good results in the Australian comps sees Joel Rebecchi (AUS) leap to 4th (from 15th). With Oleg Bondarchuk (UKR) 5th, Jim Lee (USA, 6th), Steve Moyes (AUS, 7th) Manfred Ruhmer (A, 8th), Bertok Attila (HUN, 9th) a newcomer to the top 10 and Gordon Rigg (GB) is 10th. Francoise Mocellin (F) still heads the females and is in 33rd place overall on 100 points, with Kathleen Rigg (GB) 2nd and Tove Heaney (AUS) 3rd. There are 365 hang gliding pilots ranked.

The Australian Nationals and Millenium Cup have been added to the paragliding ranking since the last publication. And, the following 1998 competitions PWC Granada, Norwegian Open, PWC Grarmisch, British Open and Slovenian Nationals have been deleted (all over 18 months old). Resulting in some big changes. Steve Cox (CH) now heads the rankings on 195 points, with Tibor Berki (SWE) in 2nd (from 5th) Christian Tamegger (A) maintains 3rd place ahead of Kari Eisenhut (CH) with Hans Bollinger (CH) 5th, Martin Brunn (A) 6th, Jimmy Pacher (I) 7th, Kaspar Henny (CH) 8th, Joos Achim (D) 9th and Bodo Genz (D) 10th. Petra Krausova (CZE) heads the female rankings in 45th place overall, with Claire Bernier (F) 2nd (97th overall) and Carolyn Lansdell (CH) 3rd (121st overall). There are 437 pilots ranked.

Finally the result of the Speed Hang Gliding Pre-Worlds1999 have been included (no competitions deleted) and see John Smith (NZ) still heading the ranking (34 points) ahead of Karl Ewing (AUS) 2nd on 30 points. These two are well clear of Callum Fisher (NZ) 3rd on 18 points. Top 10 hang gliding ranked pilots Betinho Schmitz, Oleg Bondarchuk and Joel Rebecchi are also ranked in the top 10 speed gliding (4th, 6th and 10th respectively) The only female to be ranked is Tascha McClellan (NZ) in 29th. There are 32 pilots ranked.

There have been no competitions added to the Class 2 rankings, and the Wild West 1998 event has been dropped. David Sharp (USA) still heads the Class 2 rankings ahead of Brian Porter (USA) and Kristof Kratzner (D). Niki Hamilton (IRE) is the only female ranked (16th overall). There are 26 pilots ranked.

Forthcoming hang gliding competitions (class 1 only unless otherwise indicated) that qualify for WPRS points are:

    Category 1: Female World Championships, Greece; European Championships, Austria (class 1 & 2); World Speed Gliding Championships, Greece.
    Category 2: Brasilian Nationals; Japanese Nationals; Spanish Open; Pre-World Air Games; German Open (class 1 & 2); British HG Open Championships (class 1 & 2), St Andre, France.

Future paragliding competitions that qualify for WPRS points are:

    Category 1: European Championships, Germany; World Accuracy Champs, UK.
    Category 2: Manilla PG Open, Australia; PWC's - Brasil, Granada (pre WAG), Portugal, Mieussy and Chamonix (France); Pre PWC's - Ostirrol Open, Austria, France; Nordic Open, France; Zimbabwe Open; Slovenian Open; German Open.
