More Olympic Support for Parachuting
Lausanne, Switzerland, 30 October 2000

A landmark agreement was signed at the new Grimaldi Forum Congress Centre in Monte Carlo on Friday 27 October 2000. The signatories were International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch, fresh from the triumph of the Sydney Olympics, and Ron Froelich, President of the International World Games Association (IWGA). The agreement provides for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to supply financial, logistic and moral support to the World Games, the multi-sport event that brings together sports, including parachuting, that are recognised by the IOC but not yet on the Olympic Games programme. This agreement, some 20 years in the making, greatly adds to the prestige and status of the IWGA, of which FAI has been a member since 1995.
The next World Games takes place in Akita, Japan, in September 2001. The prestigious Olympic rings will now fly over this event, alongside the IWGA symbol. The FAI's events will include formation skydiving, freestyle skydiving and accuracy landing and will feature the world's best male and female skydivers.
The annual general meeting of the IWGA also took place in Monaco on Thursday 26 October 2000. For the first time ever, all 30 member federations were represented, most by their presidents and/or secretaries general. The FAI was represented by Secretary General Max Bishop and IWGA Board Member and FAI/IOC Liaison officer, Roland Hilfiker. The most important decision taken was the attribution of the 2005 World Games to the city of Duisburg in Germany. It is already clear that this will be a very prestigious and highly mediatised event. The city's video promoting the bid started with a sequence showing a sailplane - possibly a portent of further air sports involvement in this increasingly important event.
