More Than 500 Years Later... A Modern Air Sport’s Chronology 1495
The concept of a parachute is developed by the genius of Leonardo da Vinci.
1797
Frenchman André Garnerin makes the first recorded descent by parachute.
1905
The Olympic Congress in Brussels encourages the formation of the "Universal Aeronautical Federation to regulate the various aviation meetings and advance the science and sport of Aeronautics". On October 14th, the Fédération Aéronautique (FAI) is founded in Paris.
1937
Parachuting is added to the air sports governed by the FAI.
1949
The control over international championships and world records is assumed by the FAI Parachuting Commission (International Parachuting Commission - IPC).
1951
The First World Parachuting Championships are held in Bled, Yugoslavia.
1985
The FAI receives recognition by the International Olympic committee for gliding, hang gliding and parachuting.
1988
Parachuting and skydiving are prominently featured in the Opening Ceremony of the 25th Olympiad in Seoul, Korea.
1997
Parachuting and skydiving events are included in the official sports program of the 5th World Games in Lahti, Finland.
2000
The 25th World Parachuting Championships are held in Ise-Shima, Japan.
2001
Parachuting and skydiving events are included in the official sports program of the 6th World Games in Akita, Japan.
2005
Parachuting/skydiving hope to feature prominently on the sports program of the 7th World Games Duisburg 2005. The IPC already evaluates which events it will propose to the IWGA and the Duisburg organizers.
2002 - 2008
HIGH AMBITION for PARACHUTING/SKYIDIVING. The FAI continues to pursue the goal of achieving this air sport’s inclusion in the sports program of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008
